The Norwegians wrote a check Obama can’t cash

October 12, 2009

Whether he deserved to win the Nobel Peace Prize or now, he won it. It will only hurt him.

I think  J.R. Dunn at American Thinker is right that it establishes him as the international teacher’s pet:

What the award has done is to mark him permanently as a teacher’s pet, that odious figure from everyone’s school days who was always first in line, always got the highest marks, and always got the prizes whether deserving or not.

However, I think the greatest harm done to Obama by the Norwegians was that in giving him the Peace Prize, they erected a tremendous, international monument to many promises that he would rather we all forget. He went beyond run-of-the-mill campaign puffing and assured us that he was going to usher in a new era of peace, unicorns et al. (You can track those promises here, h/t to an older SA post). His approval ratings show that the public is growing weary of his low promise to result ratio. This prize is an awesome reminder of what he promised to do, and sets a stark backdrop for his ineffectiveness.

Ross Douthat at NYT said it well:

Here was an opportunity to cut himself free, in a stroke, from the baggage that’s weighed his presidency down — the implausible expectations, the utopian dreams, the messianic hoo-ha.

Here was a place to draw a clean line between himself and all the overzealous Obamaphiles, at home and abroad, who poured their post-Christian, post-Marxist yearnings into the vessel of his 2008 campaign.

Here was a chance to establish himself, definitively, as an American president — too self-confident to accept an unearned accolade, and too instinctively democratic to go along with European humbug.

He didn’t take it. Instead, he took the Nobel Peace Prize.

Borrowing from Top Gun, Obama’s ego has been steadily writing checks his body can’t cash. The Norwegian Nobel Committee just wrote one for him for 10M kroner.
